The Basics
Games are typically played to 11 points, and you must win by 2.
Only the serving team can score points.
If the receiving team wins the rally, they get the serve but no point.
The Three-Number Score
In doubles pickleball, the score has three numbers:
- Serving team's score
- Receiving team's score
- Server number (1 or 2)
For example, when you hear "4-2-1", it means:
- Serving team has 4
- Receiving team has 2
- It's server #1 serving
Server Number Explained
Each team has two chances to score before giving up the serve:
- Server #1 serves first
- If Server #1 loses the rally, Server #2 takes over
- If Server #2 loses the rally, it's a side out and the other team serves

The Exception: Game Start
At the very beginning of the game, the starting team only gets one serve.
That is why the first score called is "0-0-2", meaning there is no second server yet.
Visual Score Example
Imagine:
- Team A: 6
- Team B: 2
- You are Server #2
You call: 6-2-2
- Win rally → 7-2-2
- Lose rally → side out

Singles Scoring
Singles pickleball is simpler. Only two numbers:
- Server's score
- Receiver's score
Serving position follows this rule:
- Even score → serve from the right
- Odd score → serve from the left
Tips for Keeping Track
- Say the score out loud before every serve
- Watch your position (even = right, odd = left)
- Use a scoreboard app to track automatically
Most players switch to an app after their first few games because it removes all the mental overhead.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting which server you are (1 or 2)
- Not calling the score before serving
- Trying to score while receiving
- Losing track mid game
