Critical Safety Notice

This app uses your iPhone's magnetometer sensor to detect metal fasteners in wall studs. It CANNOT detect wood studs directly, electrical wiring, gas lines, or plumbing. It is NOT a safety device. NEVER rely solely on this app before drilling, hammering, or cutting into walls. Always verify with additional methods.

Expectations & Limitations

This app uses your phone's magnetometer sensor. While useful for finding metal fasteners in wall studs, it is NOT a professional construction tool. Results depend on your specific device, phone case, wall construction, and environmental factors. Always verify stud locations with additional methods before drilling.

Troubleshooting & Purchases

Quick Troubleshooting Steps

Before contacting support, please try these general troubleshooting steps:

1

Remove Your Phone Case

Magnetic cases (especially MagSafe) interfere with the magnetometer sensor. Remove your case for the most accurate readings.

2

Move Away from Electronics and Appliances

TVs, speakers, refrigerators, microwaves, and other electronics produce magnetic fields that affect readings. Step away from them.

3

Recalibrate on an Empty Wall Section

Hold your phone against a section of wall you know has no studs or metal. Tap the Calibrate button to reset the baseline.

4

Hold the Top Edge of Phone Against the Wall

The magnetometer sensor is near the top of most iPhones. Keep the top edge flat against the wall surface and slide slowly.

5

Adjust Sensitivity

If getting too many false detections, reduce sensitivity. If missing studs, increase sensitivity. Find the sweet spot for your wall.

6

Reinstall the App (Last Resort)

Uninstall and reinstall the app. Settings will reset but your Pro purchase can be restored via the restore button.

Device Requirements

  • iOS: iOS 17.0 or later
  • Devices: iPhone only (no iPad support)
  • Sensor: Built-in magnetometer (all modern iPhones include this)
  • Storage: Minimal — the app is lightweight

Important Safety Disclaimer

Stud Finder uses your iPhone's built-in magnetometer sensor to detect metal fasteners in wall studs. It is NOT a professional stud finder, electrical tester, pipe locator, or safety device.

  • Detects metal fasteners only (nails, screws, brackets) — not wood studs directly
  • CANNOT detect: electrical wiring, gas lines, water pipes, or plumbing
  • NOT a safety device: NEVER rely solely on this app before drilling, hammering, or cutting into walls
  • Results vary: Different devices, environments, wall types, and phone cases affect readings
  • Always verify stud locations with additional methods and check for hidden hazards using professional equipment

Drilling, hammering, or cutting into walls without proper verification can result in electrocution, gas leaks, water damage, fire, property damage, serious personal injury, or death.
